Stonington shawl ready to graft

Stonington shawl ready to graft

Last night I left myself off at the exciting grafting stage for Stonington Shawl and have finished that today.  Not knowing exactly where my blocking pins were I started today with washing older knits.  One of which is a doily I don’t think I ever really showcased on le blog.  Horrors I believe there is a stain despite much soaking.  I honestly dislike blocking lace even though I know it is an integral part of the process.  So here I am eying a stain and considering if I should just scrap the pinning out or soldier onward.  Above Stonington.  Below  photos of doily.

Musings

Tinking
Tinking

I undid 5 rows of border on my Stonington and took the time to photograph the lovely heathered yarn.  I honestly couldn’t be more pleased.

Taking my time to knit row upon row of garter and in no mood to rush.  That is also nice.  I do pull some yarn off the cone occasionally and look down to see the curly winding yarn path and think: like sands through the hourglass… Did I just date myself?  But it is just so lovely to knit and watch the rows of garter change direction in this shawl.

Another pleasant surprise: an announcement from Kate Davies about a new book on haps.  I LOVE haps.  So excited to see that coming out soon.  I have a hap kit from Heirloom Knitting that I undid years ago due to overthinking technique.  My friend Lorraine has knit the pattern twice!  Then there is Margaret Stuart’s version which is photographed as a large bed sized throw.  And many newer interpretations.

I am not sure if there is an official definition for a hap but I think of them as an everyday shawl.  I trust Kate will educate me thoroughly tho.  🙂

Ghosts of Knits Past

The other night I woke up from a dream of a baby outfit I knit for Princess Zoe.  Princess Zoe is now 20 and has moved away from home so something knit oh so long ago.  I could see the little buttons I put on the cardigan and pullover as well as feel the cushiness of the yarn. No longer owning the outfit or pattern booklet I turned to Ravelry for help finding the pattern name/source.

Not sure if this is one of those I have gotten so old I am nostalgic for ye good ole days or what.  Might be just a longing for the many knits I have given away instead of keeping for myself.  I started searching for old blog posts, via the internet archive for project details.  No small feat since I lost several posts due to switching from wordpress to blogger {or vice versa} and then when I blogged via iWeb.  Those iWeb years get my goat.  I realize the  apple folks gave me plenty of notice that the  platform was going away but I just didn’t realize the posts, which were on the iWeb application, would also disappear.  I mean they assured me I could use iWeb even after they would no longer host a site for me so not sure why the posts had to disappear from the program as well as the world wide web.  Anyway I am slowly but surely looking for old posts and moving them here.

On the needles:  Stonington Shawl by Elizabeth Zimmermann in Jaggerspun heather yarn just like my last one.  Which has been lost over the years.  Ignore that I steadfastly insisted on typing Stonington in those old posts.  Pics forthcoming.  Until then

Finit

Stonington Shawl designed by Elizabeth Zimmerman is blocking as I type. I would show you a picture but heathered gray doesn’t photograph well on a navy and cream check. Will take pix and upload asap~probably for tomorrow’s post. The yarn is a mystery…the cone is stamped Jaggerspun but the actual paper sticker with yarn type/color/dye lot/weight has been torn. I *think* its Heather in the 2/8 weight. My shawl weighs 9.7 oz and I have 6.6 oz left includeing cone weight. I used 4.5mm Addi Naturas so size 7? The pattern calls for 16 oz of shetland jumper weight if I am remembering correctly so am now wondering if I should be lucky enough to eek out the Faux Russian Stole from GOL which I think calls for 8 oz out of this cone. Should I try my luck? Either that or a buncha scarves. What would you do?
